Resources such as human and capital are vital to supporting an organization’s strategic initiatives. It is important to understand that the human resource that includes the personnel or the workforce can steer the direction of the organization. For this to work, the organizations need to establish leadership or management roles in their health facilities (Macphee & Suryaprakash, 2012). Also, at the facility level, problem-solving needs ought to be developed. Similarly, the subordinate staffs need to undergo training and mentorship programs to sharpen their skills.
Secondly, the capital resources used in health care setting include the health care facilities, tools and equipment used for treatment and funds. Increased competition, the population of the patients and the need to provide quality services make it necessary to employ capital resources. There should be a large number of sophisticated medical equipment relative to the number of patients treated in a hospital (Buchan & Aiken, 2008).
It is important to make right decisions regarding the allocation of these resources. The decision makers in health care institutions should consider certain criteria when deciding to allocate resources equitably. The concepts to consider include the organization’s mission, quality, need, process and its efficiency. The mission of the organization focuses on the lives of the patients. Therefore, a health care facility will consider its purpose before making a decision. Secondly, decisions are made about the quality of services rendered to the patients. They also, consider patient’s satisfaction. For example, in a sustainable economy, organizations tend to use higher quality benchmarks because technology and human resources are available.
The third concept involves making decisions efficiently. Therefore, the organization will have to consider the cost-effectiveness analysis of the resources before making a decision. Also, they will have to consider the distribution and equality of accessing the resources. Fourth, decisions are made based on the needs of the patients. Priority is given to save endangered lives in hospitals. For example, patients who suffer cardiogenic shock are likely to given priority. When looking at the equality of access, the overall needs of the society and associated programs costs are what are considered. Lastly, the organization will consider the process of solving decisions. The process involves analyzing the participants involved in decision making and the input of the community and patients. The importance of process is seen when efficiency and need of the resources conflict.
The decision of resources allocation is executed and evaluated by the healthcare managers, physicians and nurses and also the policy makers. Therefore, they have to do their jobs to improve the outcome of the organization. Sometimes changes might occur in factors affecting resources allocation and will pose a problem. In such scenario conflict arises, and a good process should be employed to mitigate the negative impacts imposed. Therefore, the decision makers will use the healthcare ethical principle approach. According to Macphee and Suryaprakash (2012), the organization will use the representative board to reflect the values and express the interest of the society. Similarly, a member of the council of the community can be used to explain the trade-offs and challenges the hospital is going through.
