Literature Review

The industrial revolution has been synonymous with technological developments that have dominated human life. The merits have been marvelous such as improved lighting in the house, improved environmental use of materials that ensure accountability to enhance housing experience(Ayalp 164). These are among the positive dimensions of the industrial revolution. The ugly side has revealed increased use of materials that are harmful to the environment and has resulted in increased waste developments around the world. Different approaches have been taken on how to reduce the adverse effect on the environment, and one that stands out is the approach to sustainable energy use.

Saudi Arabia is one of the leading countries in the world that has the highest rate of development cities. Currently, the real estate market as of 2018, is marked at 4% growth rate against the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) 683.8 billion USD (Majdalani). Due to the recent drop in oil prices, the country’s economy has suffered the most with trickled down effect to the real estate market. In fiscal resolution measurement, the Saudi Arabia government has obligated to improve the property market up at 7% from 4% according to Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 portfolio (Majdalani). This is anticipated to increase the number of houses and modern housing designs shortly. In lieu of this, factors on eco-friendly housing have been brought up with emphasis on lighting. According to Saudi Arabia’s Saudi Standard Code of Lighting of Indoor Work Places, the directory provides an intimate detail of the voltage type and lighting fixtures required in a house (Saudi Arabia Standards). However, the code does not stipulate any measures on the use of sustainable lighting material or concepts to improve environmental protection and sustainability.
