Take Me out Tonight and A Matter of Husbands

In the play, Take Me Out Tonight by Callie Kimbal, Billy and Deb have a conflict mainly because Deb is having a relationship with Billy’s best friend Cosmo. Deb admits that she has slept with Cosmo but promises it will never happen again. There are several gender stereotypes roles that are seen in this play. Among them is that Deb is working while Billy stays home all day. It would be expected for Billy to be out working while Deb stays home as a house wife. Another thing is that Billy does not seem to understand the needs of Deb and she end up cheating on him. Another stereotype role is that Billy is the one asking for a child to have something to do all day. Women are the ones who ask for children to take care off.

In the play, A Matter of Husbands by Ferenc Molnar, Earnest Young Woman confronts Famous Actress and not Alfred because she loves Alfred. She thinks that it is the Famous Actress who has stolen Alfred from her which is very typical of women. She is urging the Famous actress to return Alfred to her.  The famous actress however deceives her that Alfred is playing a little comedy to make her jealous. Molnar wrote, “It is perfectly clear that your husband has been playing a little comedy to make you jealous, to revive your interest in him”. The famous actress deceives her that Alfred is pretending to be in a relationship with her to make her wife jealous.  She received her that the flowers, letters and the lock of hair are not really from her or meant for her.

Response to Nikita Tohaan

Hi Nikita, nice analysis there, Deb and Billy have relationship problems. Though married, Deb is sleeping with Billy’s best friend who was also the best man in their marriage. Billy stay home all day as Deb goes to work. He just sits down gossiping on the phone and eating junk food. Typically, a man is supposed to go to work while the woman stays home gossiping. This is a gender stereotype role. In addition, Billy is asking Deb for a child and Deb agrees for she is trying to make up for cheating on him.

On Molnar’s play, the famous actress uses her manipulative nature to easily deceive the Earnest young woman. The famous actress is having a relationship with Alfred but she manages to deceive Earnest young woman that Alfred is just trying to make her jealous. Earnest young woman loves Alfred and eagerly believes what she was told by the Famous actress.

Response to Nino Khakhiashvili

Hi Nino, great line of thought over there. Deb and Billy are very horrible to each other in their relationship. Billy stays home all day watching TV, gossiping over the phone and eating junk food. He also complains about his physical appearance claiming he is fat. Deb on the other hand goes to work. However, Deb feels that Billy is not giving her much attention and therefore decide to cheat on him with his best friend Cosmos. Even after Deb confesses to have slept with Cosmos, Billy forgives her after being promised it will never happen again. These are all gender stereotype roles. On Molnar’s play, the famous actress deceives Earnest young woman that Alfred is using the actress to make her jealous. The famous actress uses her manipulative nature to get the earnest young woman into believing her. Earnest young woman is very naive and believes the famous actress.
