Team Building in an Organization

The idea behind team building is to become an effective performing unit in an organization. The organization will tend to create a cohesive group from a group of individuals to avoid common challenges that might undermine the team. Therefore, it is in the interest of the organization to have an all-round developed team that will increase it productivity. Besides, to create a cohesive team requires the participation of all team members. In this paper, we shall look at two videos that depict two different concepts of team building. Moreover, the paper will also entail the benefits an organization might get from using the concepts and how I may employ the team building concepts in my organization.

For this particular paper, I chose the following two videos that portray team building methods. The first video is about teamwork in the workplace, created and uploaded by Heat Inc. The video explains the importance of meetings in an organization. Meetings allow a team to communicate and discuss the various objectives that the organization should achieve (Heat Inc., n.d). Therefore, the video vividly exhibits the following concepts of a team building. In the video, an organization should have clear expectations or goal. Employees with clear knowledge or understanding of the company’s defined goals will always develop a strong team that will improve the performance of the organization. Frequent meetings or discussion forums allow members to know each other and build trust (Heat Inc., n.d).

Similarly, meetings provide platforms where members can communicate their opinions about the organization’s goals. On the other hand, the video also addresses team dysfunctions. The video explains the fear of conflict in an organization. Teams that fear conflicts end up having boring meetings and therefore, all the issues discussed in the meeting become ineffective. Also, with conflicts in a team, members will always engage themselves in creating environment thrived with personal attacks and back-channelled politics. The second dysfunction entailed the absence of trust among team members. Members who lack trust for one another conceal their weaknesses and mistakes from other team members (Lencioni, 2013). Similarly, such members will always hesitate to provide constructive feedback to any task assigned by the organization. Moreover, they will always abscond meetings and give lame excuses as to why they could not attend the meeting. Lastly, members with an absent of trust will always find it difficult to move out of their responsibilities and help others with their tasks.

After watching the video, I realized that the techniques portrayed would benefit team performance to a greater extent. Teams that address dysfunctions will always retain their star employees since they would have solved conflicts issue and every member will trust one another. Also, a team member will be much comfortable to ask for help, admit mistakes in case he/she is unable to meet the target. The team members can also align the organization’s common objectives. They can put vital issues on the table and have serious meetings to address the matter.

The second video is about outrageous games corporate team building by advanced visual production. The video describes team building activities that entail collaborative games or exercise that most organizations engage their employees (Advanced Visual Production, n.d). The team building concepts portrayed in this video are commitment and collaboration. Team members should practice mutual commitment to make a successful team. In the video, the act of commitment by employees is shown when they engage in various exercises and training. When members commit themselves, they expect their skills to grow. Similarly, they devote to work hard in a team building if they feel that the task they are undertaking is valuable. Secondly, the video describes collaboration. Members of a team should work together to achieve success. The collaborative games shown in the video include 4-way tug-of-war and save the egg.

The team dysfunction addressed in the video is inattention to results. Teams that do not focus on getting convincing results end up failing. Such teams will always find it very difficult to defeat competitors. Similarly, there is a high possibility of the team losing achievement-oriented employees (Lencioni, 2013). Lastly, the team encourages its members to focus on their own individual goals. Therefore, such moves will never benefit the team or the organization.

I do believe that the techniques portrayed in this video would enhance team performance in the following ways.  Team building makes individuals feel positive and confident at work. When members engage in activities where they collaborate and work as a team, stress disappears, the number of mistakes reduces since members can help one another. Therefore, this will enhance the performance of the team. Similarly, commitment and collaboration increases the participation rates of the team members and reduce complaints about the quality of services in the organization.

I have experienced this type of team building in my organization. Our organization ensured its employees participate in collaborative games or exercises to enhance their commitment towards achieving goals. Also, activities increased the team’s collaboration by establishing a stronger bond between employees. A team building activity such as a tug-of-war allows everyone to participate competitively. Therefore, such an idea was brought to the organization so that employees could apply the concept of hard work and overcome the competitors. Second, the concepts of communication and clear expectation is also enhanced through meetings. When employees in an organization attend meetings, they develop trust, ease conflicts and enhance effective communication.

In my opinion, I do believe that there is no technique that is better than the other one. Any of the techniques, when employed by the organization, will extremely work well to improve the performance of the organization. Moreover, the successfulness of the organization is determined by goals or expectations that the employees should achieve, commitment, collaboration and good communication. When such concepts are employed in a team, the outcome will be high. Therefore, the organization should use both team building techniques to enhance its performance.

My organization will significantly benefit from team building techniques. First, I will arrange a new way of conveying our team’s meetings. We shall increase the number of meetings from three to five in a week. Meetings are critical and ensure that the issues discussed are put in practice. Communication is the key to a successful group meeting. The team member will understand the well-defined team goals through effective communication channels. Therefore, each and every team in the organization will have a common social media account and email addresses that will be used to pass information about the meeting. The other technique is collaborative participation in the team building activities. Members will be required to participate fully in any of the team building activity to enhance their commitment and teamwork. After a tiresome day of working, employees will be requested to participate in games such as a tug-of-war game or drop the ball. These games promote cooperation and healthy competition among employees.
