Technology and Communication

In my view, the rise of technology has had a positive impact on communication. Advancement in technology has brought the world more closer making communication between people more over a long distance easier. Phone calls are faster than telegrams but telegrams are faster than letters. Cell phones allow people to speak and listen to each other voice making more like a face to face communication. The emails on the other hand are the instantaneous version of the paper letter. Webcams supported by programs such as, iChat, Skype or Google Video Chat allows people to see each other as they chat. This kind of communication is almost like a face to face communication.

Technology has enabled us to strengthen our relationship in many ways. It enables us to keep in touch with old friends, colleagues, classmates and co-workers. Through social websites such as facebook, twitter and others, it is easy to trace old friends and be in frequent contact.  These social sites have simplified the social networking process.  In addition, through communication technology, one can be able to communicate with many people at the same time. People interact differently in the society, there are those who cannot communicate freely on face to face communication but can do it well on a cell phone on the social media sites.

However, communication technology has also had the negative effects like deception, aggression, misunderstandings among others. This happens when people misuse the technology. Deception is a human action not a technology action. With that the negative effects of technology are the doings of the humans not technology.  Technology has been influential in modernizing communication but when misused can be dangerous.

Response to Kasey Bryson

Hi Kasey, great line of thought there. There are many good things about technology as you have mentioned. It allows us to keep in touch with old friends and classmates. Through social websites such as facebook, twitter and others, it is easy to trace old friends and be in frequent contact.  These social sites have simplified the social networking process. You have the view that social media ruin relationships. It creates deception and secrets. In my view, social media is not the problem. The users of social media are the problem. Anyone who has the guts to cheat in a relationship would still have done the same without the presence of social media. When there was no technology people still socialized but at low rates. I feel that it is the users who misuse technology and then blame it for the consequences. Technology will not tell you to cheat for that is a personal decision.

Response to Laura McGough

Hi Laura, great thought there, social media has given us great opportunities to connect with people whom we would have not necessarily met or been able to keep in touch with otherwise. Al, these are positive things about technology. You hold the view that technology destroys relationships but I think that people themselves destroy relationship online. If people meet online and then get intimate, is the problem with technology or with them. They are people who can make decisions and choices and when they make a choice to be intimate, technology has nothing to do with that.
