Technology Prospects: The Rogerian

Introduction

`Technology is the collection of techniques, skills and processes that are used in the accomplishment of an objective such as production of goods and services or scientific production. It can include the knowledge of processes or techniques or it can be implanted in computers, machines, factories which can be operated by human beings without the detailed knowledge of the workings’ of the machines. Technology has different effects on human beings and in efficiency when it comes to attainment of objectives. In this century, there is technology for very process which has made life easier. However, it has also created some problems and challenges including loss of jobs for employees. The coming of the computer led to many people losing their jobs. The computer can do virtually anything it is programmed to do. This has made many people to depend on it instead of being creative (Dasgupt 144). The human creativity has been replaced by technology and this will have effects in the long run.

Claim

It is hard to deny that technology has taken over the world. Everything is done with some king of technology today. From computers to automated machines, efficiency has improved in different processes. Today, children are more attracted to platting video games as opposed to the traditional way of outside playing. The creative games people were playing are no longer there. One can argue that everything is developing and games should also develop but these games made children creative. Today, children are portraying their creativity in the playing and development of video games (Adams 40). Children have been able to express themselves in ways they could not traditionally.

The claim that technology has improved the life of the people cannot be refuted but it is also dangerous considering the rate at which humans are adopting it. When playing for children becomes technological, their physical and emotional development is affected. This is the reason why we are developing emotionally unstable children. Children these days spend all their time in video games and movie watching and have no time to interact with nature and people to learn and develop.

Background

Many adults are perplexed by what they think their children are learning when they interact with technology. But is this really how children grow and learn. Children need physical play to be able to grow and develop. In the early years of a child, learning is very active and children learn through direct play and hand on experience with materials, people and the nature (Strauss). Parents are encouraging their children to adopt the technology as early an age which is developing technological creativity in them. This will soon backfire on the same parents when their children can do nothing using their hands. Technological creativity is taking over human creativity.

In future, when everybody has adopted technological creativity, who will be creative enough to develop new technologies? Through interacting with people and nature, scientists and engineers learn about a social problem and then through creativity develop a technology to solve the problem (Dasgupt 144). The hum creativity comes in handy in this process. When children are taught to depend on the existing technology. They will not be able to develop their own technologies and this will be a problem in future.

 

Opposition

Supporters of technology argue that it has solved the problem of inefficiencies in the world. Learning for students has been improved since a student can access learning material s from anywhere through the internet. Children have been encouraged to express themselves in ways they could not. It is argued that technology will never reach its potential until people stop thinking of technology as televisions. Neuroscience has proven that everybody is born with some kind of creativity but some people keep this creativity active while other innate (Saxena).  In this age of technology it is argued that it is easy for people to utilize the technology in keeping ones creativity alive.

Saxena in her article argues that the education system is stealing away the creativity of children by emphasizing on mechanical and system thinking rather than intellectual and critical thinking. She argues that through technology; creativity can be brought back to the education system. Technology offers several tools that help students develop critical thinking such as games, audio and video tools, digital stories, info graphics, blogs for creative thinking and many others.

Common Ground

It is arguable that technology has increased critical thinking. Things like video games are developed and all children do is play and not develop. Those who develop the games are creative but those who play the games cannot be argued to become critical thinkers. A game is like a routine, once you master it, there is no more challenge. In addition, when children spend so much time on the video games, they have no chance to interact with nature and learn how to solve the day to day problems. There are social phenomenons that cannot be taught using video games. A child needs to interact with other people to learn some of these things.

However, technology has promoted creativity. There are those who have been able to express themselves creatively using technology (Saxena). However, it has also taken away the traditional creativity which enabled our fore fathers to develop some of these technologies. Today, people are using the existing technologies to develop new technologies. Traditionally, the pioneers of technology had no technology to help them. They utilized their own creative thinking and knowledge from interacting with nature to develop technologies.

Conclusion

Technology has improved the expression of creativity but not the development of the creativity itself. People use technology to express the creativity in their minds. However, children these days are using the technology for playing and socializing other than developing creativity. They days when people tried to solve social problem s buy developing technologies are gone. Isaac Newton was interacting with nature when he discovered the law of gravity. Children need to interact with nature to learn and develop their minds. However, when they learn only through technology, a problem will arise in the future. Imagine future leaders who can only express their creativity through technology. The so many social problems they will be expected to handle will be burden to them. Technology should not be allowed to take away the traditional creativity.
