The 1990 “Pretty Women movie”

In 1993, I was nine year of age when I first got exposed to culturally and racially different people through movies. The 1990 “Pretty Women movie” particular got my interest because of the character Vivian Ward played by Julia Roberts. I did not like the representation of women in the movie, as it revealed sexual objectification (“Pretty Woman (1990),”). Therefore, I developed a negative impression on racial and culturally different people. Julia played the role of a female prostitute, and I was disgusted by the idea that she agreed to sell herself to a businessperson for a weekend.  I did not like that women had to expose and the sell themselves to survive as at that time most of my mentors were hard working women. From a cultural pluralist perspective I believe that my experience qualified as negative, this culture portrayed the film revealed how white men and women were living the dream going to private jets, designer stores and class parties (Ebert, 1990). Things that people of my culture could only see in movies, it made me question my existence in my community as I also wanted to a billionaire someday like Edward Lewis.

Furthermore, I did not like there was limited to no representation of people from my culture in the movie as rich and elite. I also did not like it that the film hailed prostitution by making it seem that it is okay, yet it one of the vices in my culture. I felt bad that people of my community are marginalized and are rarely given platforms to showcase their talents in Hollywood due to racial segregation. I would have loved a society where people are more receptive and interactive with each other despite sociological differences.
