The Concept of Communication

Introduction

Communication is a critical aspect in human generation. It refers to how information, thoughts or ideas flow from one person to another. A communication process is termed as effective only when the receiver understands the intention of the sender.  The modes and channels of communications have been constantly changing over time. These modes have evolved from the traditional communication channels to the current digital telecommunication channels and online communication. Choice of communication mode largely depends on availability, effectiveness and the type of information intended to be delivered. In order to effectively choose a communication mode, it is important to analyze the advantages and dis advantages of the various communication channels(Babbie, 2011).

Discussion

Traditional communication channels are still effective modes of communication to date.  Examples of these include speaking, non-verbal, writing and visual. However each of these channels has potential advantages and disadvantages.

Telephone is a traditional communication gadget that enables people to have conversation from different vicinities.  Telephone use has several advantages. For instance, use of telephone enables relaying of information across a long distance.  Telephone use also enables fast communication between the receiver and the sender. It is an effective communication mode as the receiver can seek clarity from the sender if there is misunderstanding.

Telephone use is however associated with some disadvantages. The most notable disadvantage associated with telephone use is the cost involved. Every time when one makes a phone call there must be charges incurred. The high costs incurred may hinder conclusive engagements since the participants will want to save on costs.

Another critical category of communication channels is the mass communication. This involves delivering of information to multitudes through mass media. It is concerned with how information can be relayed to a large group of people instantaneously.  Information can be relayed through radio, television and newspapers.

Television is an electrical telecommunication medium that transmits moving images through audio visual process. Television sets can transmit colored image or in black and white depending on the quality of the gadget. Use of television in mass communication has several advantages. For instance, clear idea of the intended information can be achieved due to its audio visual nature. Television can also enable live coverage of important events such as sports in any part of the world. It has high degree of effectiveness due to its ability to combine sight, sound and motion(Shimp, 2010).

Nevertheless, television use has some disadvantages. Television sets are somehow expensive which makes their accessibility a great challenge. Spending a lot of time on television can have serious health problems especially on eyes and nerves. Some programs on television can have negative effects on the culture of the viewers. Some broadcasters air irresponsible programs which can erode the behaviors of young people. It is also important to note that the advantages of television use supersede the disadvantages.

The communication sector has received a major boost in the recent pats as a result of technological advances experienced in the world. The increased availability of fiber optic in several parts has increased accessibility of internet. The increase in internet access has resulted in increase of social media as form of communication through Facebook and twitter. Information can also be through text messaging and you tube which comprises the contemporary communication(Hlawatsch, 2011).

Face book is an online social networking site started in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg. In order to use this service, one is required to register and add users as friends who you can constantly engage with. Facebook can enable direct messaging or getting continuous updates in form of notifications. The face book can also have several groups which can join people with the same interests. Facebook use is associated with several advantages. For instance, it has several registered users thus the information can reach several people. It is also not limited to global or language boundaries thus making it an effective mode of communication(Proakis&Salehi, 2013).

Face book use is however associated with some disadvantages. For example, face book use is an addictive exercise which can lead to time wasting. The communication mode can be manipulated by greedy persons for their personal gains. False information can easily be spread through the social site thus making the mode unreliable.  Facebook user should be cautious to avoid adverse effects of the false and manipulated information.

Conclusion

It is clear that communication is an integral part in human life. There are various forms of communication channels from which individuals can choose from. The choice of the communication mode requires extensive analysis to ensure that effective communication is realized.  Several factors such as accessibility, cost, and confidentiality of intended information and reliability of the communication mode must be considered.   Effective of communication is determined by how well the information is transmitted from the sender to the receiver.
