The debate on immigration

The debate on immigration has taken deep roots in US politics. Each day experts are coming up with different views on the issue. This issue has raised different sentiments from different respondents. Many aspects are surrounding the immigration debate such as national security concerns, increased immigrant populations, sanctuary cities, and immigrant laborers among others. This paper highlights national security as the central aspect regarding immigration.

National security is a core issue for any nation-state. Without protection, it means that the economy of the country will be affected. This has been witnessed in some countries in Europe. The government needs to make sure that it provides security so that people can work and realize that best in themselves.  Immigration affects both traditional safety (state-centered security) and human security (protection of the citizens). Uncontrolled borders can lead to terrorist attacks and increased crimes within limits and in the state at large. , but the security has stood firm.  For a long time, the US government has been having a lot of problems when it comes to border security. The US is the leading country with a prominent number of immigrants. Every new president in the US has to deal with the issue of immigrants.  Such borders can be safe havens for arms struggling and drug and human trafficking. This has led to deaths of so many innocents people.  The immigrant population can strain the economy of a country making it difficult for the government to provide political goods to the people. This is a threat to human security as we have witnessed in the last years.  Therefore, immigration posing imminent danger to both the citizens and the US state at large makes national security a significant aspect of concern regarding immigration.

If there is a thing that US governments take seriously is the issue of national security. National security is not just a matter of nation-state but it’s both federal and state governments concern and at large an international interest as well. Rick observes that cost of immigration is alarming at the federal, state and local governments (14). National security matters internationally because what happens in one country affects the entire international system. The whole world is monitoring the US debate on immigration because of international peace and security matters.

The US government policy regarding national security in the wake of immigration has been changing over time. During the Obama administration, a program by the name Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) was launched which offered among other things renewable work permits to undocumented children emigrants (Claire and Danielle 13). Donald Trump administration main executive order concerning national security and immigration has been creating a physical wall between the US and Mexico to secure the United States’ border with Mexico. However, this has not been received well by some Americans who believe it’s against the law.  Other executive orders by Trump include increased scrutinizing of visas and terrorism prevention by banning travels into the US from Muslim countries. This has led to a lot of protests, and the current administration is yet to find a suitable solution to the problem as the debate goes on. However, there is hope that with time the government will come up with good immigration policies.
