The Manipulation of Animation

The topic on manipulation from the lecture came out as being quite interesting. I do agree with the assertion that everything is manipulated. This would be a good explanation on how we can describe things that are not possible to describe. More so, animation is the most manipulated because it is a construction from the very start.

Favorable examples to showcase this is by use of time lapse and stop motion animations. Stop motion animation is recognized among the oldest forms of animation in its base design of frame-by-frame motion. The technique involves a physical manipulation of the real life objects to help create an illusion of these objects moving (Wells 21).

Time lapse, on the other hand, involves the capturing of the subject at a slower frame rate to make it seem as moving faster when played back normally. This technique was first used in the motion picture by Georges Melies depicted as Carrefour De L ‘Opera of 1897 (Wells 36). Though time lapse is not captured in a similar way as stop motion, its characteristics are capable of enabling manipulated reading of reality too.

Both of these techniques represent a way of manipulating reality. Reality can be manipulated and controlled by way of making changes to individual photographs to help change the viewers’ perception. The film A Zed and Two Noughts produced in 1985 presents signs of decomposing animals by use of the time-lapse technique, which helps to speed up the process that on a normal basis would take several days or even weeks (Wells 43). The concept of making a process that would take days and condense it into several seconds presents a form of manipulating reality.
