The Person-Centered Nursing

Patient-centered care refers to the process of caring for people and their families using approaches that are valuable and significant to the individual. The method allows sick persons to be involved in their care. Patient-centered upkeep is responsive and respectful to individual patient preferences, values, and needs. It also ensures that the sick person has a say in all clinical decisions. In this system, a person’s anticipated health requirements and outcomes determine the quality measures and health choices made. Both the healthcare providers and the patients are partners in the healthcare system. Well-being experts do not treat people from a clinical point of view only but also financial, emotional, social, mental and spiritual perspective. The system has eight principles which must be followed to the latter.

The patients should also be informed about their condition while undergoing treatment. It will decrease created when people fail to get any communication from health experts. The patients should be given physical comfort from both the providers and their family members. For instance, they should be assisted to carry out their daily activities — person-centered care advocates for the alleviation of anxiety (McCormack & McCance, 2017). Caregivers mostly focus on the financial impact of the illness on the individual and other family members. It will assist in alleviating the stress that patients experience during this time. Besides, there is also a need to involve family members in the decision making process. Family members who act as caregivers should also be supported. The providers should also ensure that patients can care for themselves after leaving the hospital.

Concepts of nursing metaparadigm

Person-centered nursing focuses on four concepts namely, person, health, environment, and nursing. The four issues are known as metaparadigms of nursing. The first one emphasizes the patient who needs care. In this case, the model ensures that things such as a person’s culture, friends, family, and spirituality is taken into consideration before administering any care. The concept also addresses the issue of health (Groenwald, 2018). It ensures that the individual can access quality health care services and guarantees the patient of his or her safety. Therefore, it assists the patient to recover quickly and continue with life as usual.

Additionally, the principle also addresses the issue of the environment in the patient’s care. It comprises interior and exterior factors associated with the person. The concept allows an individual to interact with their surroundings. Lastly, the model also incorporates the nursing component. It ensures that the nurse applies his or her skills when caring for the person. Additionally, the model makes sure that the nurse has all the qualities needed to provide care. The four metaparadigms are essential in the field of nursing as they help to address patient care as a whole.

Person-centered model is a suitable theoretical framework within the nursing profession. This is because it allows patients to participate in the decision-making process. They are permitted to have a say on the issues related to their care. Additionally, it focuses on the best ways that can be used to ensure that patients access quality and affordable healthcare. The model applies to the nurse in the decision-making process. For example, a health expert’s decisions will be based on a person’s needs, goals, and desires (Schmid, 2015). The primary goal is to avoid making choices that are against the wishes of the patient.

Moreover, it is used in the nursing field to comprehend the desires of different people. As a result, health expert can allow people to make informed choices. Additionally, the model is used to differentiate roles. These duties are usually shared between health care providers and family members.

Application

The person-centered model can be applied in the future APN role in education. It can assist in enhancing change, growth, and openness in comprehending the counseling procedures. It is a technique which is helpful and practical in training. In this case, it will solve some challenges outside the curriculum faced by people (Resnick, 2018).

On the other hand, the executive can use it to get feedback from people and take appropriate measures to improve the system. Besides, a family nursing practitioner can use the model to provide complete healthcare for the patient and family. Furthermore, policymakers can use the model to take actions or plans that can assist to attain specific health objectives in the community. In the field of nursing informatics, one can use it to manage and communicate data in nursing practice. Some of this information includes the patient’s health history and the types of medications he or she used in the past.

Conclusion

A person-centered approach is one of the best strategies that are used in modern-day nursing. It allows patients to be involved in their care. Their opinions are taken into consideration before any decision is made. Their families are also included in this process hence, ensuring that they get quality care.
