The Population Bomb; Analysis

Among the many things that the oral discussion brought out is the issue of civilization and the effects that it offers to the environment. While civilization seems to be a good thing, there are those that have raised many questions about the impact that culture has on several areas. One of the significant areas of concern is on how it is affecting the population. In the year 1968, Ehrlich, pointed out that the rapid increase in the people of the world might lead to a severe strain to the environment. By that time the world population was about 3.7 million people. Today the people of the world has merely double. The doubling of people has not only come with the severe threat to the environment but also a strain the resources available to sustain the population (Hardin, 1968). Therefore, the issue that was raised at this point has emerged to be the biggest concern for the world. Although the world is trying to adopt some approach that could help in reducing this rapid increase in the population, it is only a few places that have successfully implemented such a method.

Another important theme that seems toly emerge from this time is the idea of overconsumption. One thing that seems to arise is that over consumption is a pattern that might be quite hard to control. The US alone is said to consume about a quarter of the Earth’s resources flow. Although the level of consumption has dropped since 1968, there is still serious concern on how the natural environment responds to this problem. One of the challenges related to the question of overconsumption has been on the way it leads to the outstripping the food supplies. However, in trying to propose a solution to this problem, pundits have tried to argue that the sea might provide enough food to meet the shortage. However, this has often seemed like just any other myth. Therefore, the issue of Increase in population and the overuse of resources seem to be some of the major themes that emerged from the oral discussion.

The impression of the cultural and historical context of 1968

One of the cultural backgrounds that revolved the 1960s was the issue of an increase in the population of the world. As the study shows from the period to now which is roughly about three decades, there has been a doubling of the world population. Therefore, at this time the birth rate of the world was quite high. The high birth rate was not only seen as a threat to the world, but it was also a significant challenge to the resources available. One thing that seems clear is that at this time the world was only starting to experience the effects of advanced globalization and civilization and some of the methods birth control had not yet advanced. Therefore, at this time it might seem that people did not focus on any effort to control the number of children that they had. In this respect, therefore, it is plausible to argue that the health facilities had not reached most of the parts of the world (Visser, 2017). Most of the population depended on the traditional models of treatment that did not offer any focus on any prospects about individual’s good healthy living. In most of the cases, the treatment models focused on dealing with the current problems and nothing about the possibilities of the society. It is the lack of focus on the future of the nation that resulted in some of the biggest challenges that the world is currently facing.

One of the things that emerge here is also the focus on environmental politics. As early as this time already the people had taken a sharp focus on the need to conserve the environment. Although the world population by then was only half of what is today the debate on the need to take some measures to ensure that ere is sustainability is achieved were already some of the discussion that people were having. However, just as society is characterized by adamancy, the people at that time did not take a keen interest in doing anything about the situation(Visser, 2017). Perhaps the most important thing that the people were doing at this time was only to discuss the impact that some of the things they were doing had on the society. There was no focus on coming up with any mitigation to these issues. The failure to take action at this early level is the primary reason that the environment is in such a sorry state today. Some pundits have argued that the damage that has been done to the environment is nothing that can be solved. However, I would not subscribe to such school of thought. I still believe that much be done to correct the situation that we are in. The only focus should not be on the talking but rather on implementing a policy that can help to mitigate the current problem. With such attention, we might have a future that might not also wonder why there were only discussions about these issues and no focus on real solutions.

Civilization is an important connection between media, politics, war, protests, identifies development, environmental science and arts. Enlightenment is the development of the society regarding the culture, methods of production among the many others things. Therefore, as the nation advances in several areas, one might often realize that the developments are often linked. When society develops regarding their freedom of media, they would also grow in their politics. The advancement in the freedom of press allows people to have a better understanding of the role they have in politics; they also get the understanding that they have rights(Sugiyama, 2015). While gaining the knowledge of their rights, these people even understand that they have to agitate for these rights and this is the reason they would engage in protests to force the government to listen to their issues. Besides, the better understanding of the rights of people in society has led to the development of the problem of identity. People that have a better understanding of their place in the community would want to identify not only to their culture but also to the nationality. Therefore, in looking at the society back in 1968, civilization had already achieved some advanced level. Though the level of civilization was different in various communities, one thing that seemed ordinary among the multiple societies is that everyone was moving towards the better understanding of their rights and the roles that they should play in advancing their culture.

Besides, the development of politics also provided an avenue for the leaders of the day to look at some of the problems that are facing the society. In looking at some of these problems, one of the emerging issues has been the environment. The advanced civilization of the world has led to the destruction of the society, and thus leaders of the world have been forced to relook into approaches that can help in finding lasting solutions. In looking for these solutions, the focus has been on how to use science and technology to develop more environmentally friendly approaches (Sugiyama, 2015). Therefore, in looking at the society, it is evident that most of the aspects have a close association. The changes in one aspect of society translate to a change in almost all the other elements. For instance, the change in the environment does not lead to a transformation in politics alone but also leads to a change in the culture of people as they try to adapt to new approaches. Therefore, the society seems to be an interconnected hub were small issues are related and interdependent.

There is a need to understand that the issue of population is not an issue that has started in the near past. About three decades ago the society had already started taking an interest on the role that the growth in population might have on the environment. However, history clearly shows that the biggest challenge that society has faced is in coming up with solutions that can help in dealing with some of the problems that the community faces. In looking back at the sixties, there was already the concern on population growth; however, since then, there has never been any solution to the problem. It then seems that society would always talk about the issues they face by they will never implement working condition. There is thus needed to look at these issues in trying to make a better society.
