The psychology of personality

The psychology of personality

The main papers idea is gaining an insight into the psychology of personality. In many instances, people display consistent patterns in their experiences, and their reactions to the experience cannot be adequately described by character. There have been many theories fronted by a different scientist who have made an effort to dive dipper into the subject. Most noted is the grand theories which were done in the mid-20th century all came to the conclusion that personality psychology has a distinct way of providing an explanation to both coherence and consistency.

Additionally, these early studies enumerate that the perception of personality coherence has three phenomena that are closely linked. The first phenomena deals with coherence in social behavior and experiences. It further concludes that the actions of persons are interlinked when people come across different experiences. There is consistency in the pattern in which people respond when they come across contexts. The second phenomenon is the manner of organization exhibited in diverse psychological processes. Personality functions are do not operate as an independent lot but complementary to each other. Phenomenological coherence forms the third aspect which states that people have a notion of being coherent to oneself which helps them create a coherent story.

However, the grand theories diminished, and scientists become inclined to opinions that had an empirical view and those that could be tested. Here, the works on personality psychology has been marked by three phases which are a trait, trait critique and trait revival. Additionally, there have also been developments in this subject according to the reading, and it shows that personality is close to entering the fourth phase. The manner in which previous eras handled personality trait provides the way in which they defined the subject. The trait era came into the period around 1960. Here, personality coherence was believed to depict one versus other types of behavior like being honest, friendly, inverted and conscientious. The main focus of the scientists in this era concentrated on developing reliable and concrete measures of the dispositions. During the research, the traits were very fundamental the cross-situational consistency the behavior displayed by a person.

On the other hand, the trait critique era raised concerns on whether one observes substantial cross-situational consistency in their behavior. The study also revealed that cross-situational consistency in social behavior is usually very low since one may appear more conscious and an introvert at one incidence but the same person is less responsible and an absolute extrovert in another occasion. This was when a debate on “person-situation” emanated, and the urge of researches to develop methods of spotting cross-situational consistency was stimulated. However, the trait became unpopular in the mid-1970s when trait revival had taken over the scene. However, this era did not emerge by finding a solution to the impending problem of low cross-sectional consistency but instead brought a solution to a different issue. The answer was the identification of a less sophisticated but useful set of constructs. It further made it possible for one to classify persons diversities into a five-dimensional structure referred to as a five-factor theory. However, many researchers view the five-factor structure as a description of personality tendencies. The trait critique era fronted and the notion that there was little coherence in personality functioning to support the trait constructs. Nonetheless, recent researches have proved otherwise and have shown that there is massive coherence in personality functioning. The grouping of people in a particular fixed system of trait dimensions is not right because people show different patterns and actions of which gathering is not possible.

Furthermore, the motivation for the enlarging the perception that personality coherence emanates from rethinking the assumption that situations are in control of behavior is not essential. The research method that was applied in this research was the use of experiments to arrive at conclusions. For instance, when an individual is warm and very supportive to a particular occasion and the same person cold and uncooperative in another, he or she cannot be said to be lacking personality.

Explanation of how the research can be applied to the problem

During the application of analysis in solving the impending problem, one needs to understand the science of personality and coherence. Additionally, they must be able to give an explanation about it. The new era theories are also very fundamental for solving a problem since it differs from the trait critique period and does not center around questioning whether personality coherence is present. On the contrary, the concept of personality coherence is enlarged to incorporate more facets other than the tendency of behaving in a specific manner consistent to intrinsic traits. The current era also challenges the decision maker to go beyond psychological tendencies. Preferably it also provides theoretical alternatives that make use of different underlying psychological mechanisms that bring about experiences and actions over time and place. It is when the triggers for specific activities, then one can be in a position to provide a prompt solution to the problem.

Another alternative to aid in providing a solution to the problem is by applying the social cognitive theories which give an explanation of personality functioning in terms of necessary efficient and rational mechanisms to be implemented in solving problems. That is because social-cognitivist aims at digging dippers to know how the complex devices function in concert as a coherent psychological system. This theory also enables one to develop knowledge and skills to reflect upon the environment in which they operate and also reflect on their capabilities to make a plan on finding the adequate course of action. Moreover, the social-cognitive perspective is also another way that shows the movement of personality psychology beyond traits. By understanding that people are not structured to react in a certain way to environmental situations they encounter and that they have the capacity to choose and influence the environment in a way that suits them, then the application of the theory to solve problems will not be an issue.

The research also reveals that people develop strategies that prepares them to handle certain situations in the future. Consequently, personality trait tends to be proactive since people also exhibit a tendency of self-reflection which also influences their experiences. Having known different theories and what they state about personality and prediction of behavior, a person facing a problem will be in an excellent position to find a solution that is viable depending on the situation. Furthermore, it will improve the manner in which they interact with other persons and the environment compared to those that have not had a chance to get informed of the scientific methods of handling the issue.
