The Southwest Pacific

The Southwest Pacific

At the beginning of 1944, the Southwest Pacific was entirely under the control of the allies. By February, the Allies decided to make a move towards the central Pacific. The allied forces acquired the supremacy on land and air, and they slowly moved from every island to another island with the intention of taking control over them, but in the process, they sustained significant causalities. The Japanese defended their positions until 1945 on the Chinese Mainland. The regular air and naval strikes reduced the number of bases for the Japanese in the entire region. After the decline of the Marshall and Mariana Chains Island to the Marine and US army, the troops established airfields to prepare them for air strikes on Japan. The Marianas was chosen since it was the most strategic location close to Japan for the new technology B-29 Bombers to access the mainland. When the United States was gearing up for the bombardment of Japan, the military leaders progressed with their campaign in the southwest and central Pacific.

In the Southwest General Douglas MacArthur and Chester W. Nimitz established the Philippines assault while still in the central Pacific. The leaders under the guidance of the king forced an attack on Formosa which is currently called Taiwan. In early 1945, the American soldiers experienced a significant loss when Iwo Jima and Okinawa were invaded.  The two islands were of strategic importance off the coast of the home islands for the Japanese.  Even after the severe attack from the Japanese and the causalities that were suffered due to the suicidal Japanese air attacks, the American forces reorganized and they managed to conquer Okinawa in the mid-June 1945. On 17, October 1944 and after preparing for the bombardment, the General led the other US troops to invade the Philippines and managed to seize the islands of Leyte Gulf. On 26 March 1945, the US troops made an invasion of the Ryukyus, and Lieutenant Buckner led this invasion as the commanding general.

The Atomic Bomb technology

On August 1945, the Army for the United States and the air force dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Several people died in the original explosion and many more killed later from radiation exposure. The atomic bomb applies the technology of radiation emission which covers a broad area, and it is hazardous to the body. After three days another bomb was dropped on the Japanese city of Nagasaki where approximately 120,000 civilians died from two blasts. On August 8, the Soviet Union proclaimed war on Japan and invaded Manchuria which was occupied by the Japanese. Japan decided to surrender on August 14, 1945, and the America forces started the mission of conquering Japan. Japan formally surrendered to the US, Great Britain, and the Soviet Union on September 2, 1945. The US Admiral Chester was the supreme allied commander for the Pacific Ocean areas, and he was responsible for the launching of the atomic bomb in 1945.  South West Pacific was a vital theater in the Pacific region and was commanded by the US General Douglas MacArthur. The General was responsible for the organization of the troops and in progressing with the journey of occupying more territories in Japan as the other troops prepared to launch the atomic bomb.
