The ‘Tale of the Twelve Brothers’ as it relates to Modern Day Society

Modern society is marked by an endless need for power and dominance. Nations, as well as individuals, crave to have power and to extend their lineage regardless of the measures they take to do so. Evil has become rampant in society, and the need for power has turned people blind to human suffering. Many people go to extremes to find power which ultimately leads to their destruction. This is the case in the tale of the twelve brothers. As will be seen in this paper, the need for power and dominance can have severe consequences.

The tale of the twelve brothers is about a king who had twelve sons, and he planned to kill them to get a daughter that would inherit his property and extend his lineage. The twelve brothers get word of their father’s grand plot, and they decide to run and hide in a cottage deep in the forest. They, however, plan to take revenge on every female they come across, and they vow never to forgive their father (Tale of the Twelve Brothers 12). However, while in the forest, the King’s wife gives birth to a beautiful baby girl with a star on her forehead.  After many years, the girl hears about the existence of her brothers, and she sets out to find them. When she finally finds them, she is welcomed warmly, and the siblings live in harmony. However, out of ignorance, the girl one day plucks twelve lilies which results to the twelve brothers turning in to raven s (Tale of the Twelve Brothers 18). To cut a long story short, seven years pass and the twelve brothers regain their human form just in time to rescue their sister who was facing persecution.

This story relates to modern society. Leaders in many countries are on the hunt for power and authority. Just like the king, they are willing to engage in all sorts of inhumane activities to gain the upper hand in society. Leaders do not care who they harm in the process, and they do not care about the long term consequences of their actions.  Just like the king who was willing to kill his twelve sons to secure his wealth, leaders resort to violence and even murder to have authority and dominance.

In conclusion, the tale of the twelve brothers shows how the need for power and dominance can lead even the most beautiful soul to commit inhumane acts. The society today craves power and dominance, and they are willing to resort to dubious methods to achieve it. From the story, we learn that greed and desire can lead to destruction, anger, and hatred. Were it not for the girl’s intervention; the twelve brothers would have unleashed their wrath on every female and also their father. Good deeds are also repaid. Because of the girl’s good deeds, she was able to be rescued by her brothers and did not get killed.
