Time Capsule

From the 1960 time capsule, I got three items; Political assassinations that dominated that period, the 1960s women’s movement and a book about Abbie Hoffman.

Abbie Hoffman was one of the most influential American activists of the 20th century. He was born in 1936 in Massachusetts. He was known to be trouble during his school days which later reflected on his activist role. He is known for his most influential book the Revolution of the hell of it that earned him a 5-year prison term at the Chicago conspiracy trial.Other than the Revolution of the Hell of it, he wrote other books such as Steal this Book, Woodstock Nation, and To America with Love. He a co-founded the Youth International Party otherwise called the “Yippies.”He played a tremendous activist role in the 1960s that led to his arrest. He is recognized as an icon of the American anti-war movements.

The 1960s in the U.S. is associated with lots of civil rights protests, and the assassination of several great leaders such as John F. Kennedy and activist Martin Luther King. Their death ignited riots across the U.S as Vietnam, and anti-war movement was peaking. These people fought for equality of all races, including African Americans (O’Neil, 1971). The 1960s were a period of violent civil unrest not only in the U.S but all over the world. With the revolution calls in the air, almost every black national leader in the US was assassinated.

The women’s movement in the 1960s inspired many middle-class white women to create organized movements. They were motivated by their lack of power and voice in major decisions. The women’s movement is sometimes called the second –wave of feminism.Unlike the first-wave feminism that dominated in the 19th century, the second-wave touched on every area of women’s life experiences such as sexuality family and work. It lasted for almost two decades and led to an increase in women equality by gaining more than just enfranchisement (O’Neil, 1971).

Based upon these items, I’ve learned of the Activists’ role in the redemption of the U.S. as well as the lawsmade during the 1960s. I’ve also discovered the role of women in revolutionizing any country. Moreover, people should be allowed to raise their voices regardless of their race.No one should be victimized or assassinated based on their views.
