The United States Foreign Policy

Given the current situation of the two nations, it is in the best national interest of the U.S. to deter North Korea from using nuclear weapons in the country and U.S. military forces abroad. Similarly, since Japan and South Korea are U.S. allies, it is important to discourage massive human right violation. In the case when North Korea launches the nuclear weapons, the most affected areas would be Japan and North Korea since they are the ones in constant conflict with North Korea (Joo & Kwak, 2016). The U.S has its military bases in the mentioned two nations and a strike by North Korea would have significant damage to American Citizens thus affecting the country’s national-security interest.

If I were the foreign policy advisor, I would have recommended that the president should consider reintroducing the tactical nuclear weapons to increase strength in the region. This approach will help to deter North Korea from making nuclear weapons threats (Joo & Kwak, 2016). The U.S. must reinforce its deterrence tactics by ensuring that it has more military power from its allies. It would be appropriate to strengthen the national, regional and global missile defense tactics.

I think that the new round of diplomacy would yield better results. Diplomacy can work through persuasion. North Korea can get convinced if the U.S. stops military training on the Korean Peninsula. Also, there can be better results if the U.S. threatens to impose sanctions on countries that support North Korea since this approach would weaken their military base. Citing Joo and Kwak (2016), Chinese Intervention would help because they hold the key to persuading North Korea. China and North Korea have had a bad history; however, renewed political and economic relationship would help calm the nuclear weapon issue.
