Values and Goal Setting

Values and Goal Setting

Part 1: Values

Values are those standards that tend to give us a direction when dealing with day to day activities. These values are usually shaped by the things we have experienced in life, the cultural background involved and the stage of life among other things.

The types of values discussed in the PowerPoint include professional, personal, and civic and community values. Personal values tend to affect people’s behavior as they guide the choices made and views on different perspectives. Professional values, on the other hand, are a manifestation of how personal values are translated into the workplace environment. Community values on their part are more about how people view others in the community and ways of participating in the community.

Values can come from an individual’s experience, history or cultural background. There is also the possibility of values coming from the beliefs that people uphold. An example of a value that we share in my family is doing onto others what you would like them to do to you. This value ensures that people in the family become generous, honest, and respectful among other things. It is a value that has the ability to instigate other positive values.

An example of a positive value is being honest to others. This is a positive value since it deters someone from lying in the different capacities they might be in the society. An honest individual can easily be trusted with the affairs of others. An example of a negative value is racism. This is because it results in discrimination of people merely due to the color of their skin.

One of my personal values includes being honest at all times. This is because honesty comes with integrity and honor;  things that make it easy for people to trust you. When it comes to career value, I tend to uphold competency. This ensures that I will always be doing what is expected of me at the place of work.

There is a relationship that exists between one’s values and one’s behavior. Behavior is usually a manner in which one conducts himself or herself, and it is more of a response to an environment. One’s behavior usually comes about as a result of one’s values. Positive values result in positive behavior while negative values result in negative behavior.

An example of a fundamental value that is shared by Americans and the world is being more tolerant and open-minded. The current generation has embraced this value more compared to the people that were there before. There are issues that are being morally accepted now, but they were not acceptable some decades ago. Among these issues is human cloning, homosexuality, having children out of wedlock and pre-marital sex.

I believe that college-educated individuals can tolerate values from other communities that are different from theirs. This is because as people get educated, they become more liberal. A liberal is always open to ideas and opinions, and usually makes decisions based on the facts at hand. That is why it becomes easy to tolerate values from other communities. I think this is beneficial for the society since it makes it possible for co-existence of people from different backgrounds. It eliminates the aspect of discrimination based on what an individual believes in.

Part 2: Setting Goals

Goal: Participating in a marathon and ensuring that I finish.

SMART

Specific: This goal is specific since the objective is getting involved in a marathon and ensuring that I reach the finishing line.

Realistic: The goal is realistic since I used to run long distance in my early days in high school (though not a marathon).

Measurable: It is measurable since I will know I have accomplished the goal once I reach the finishing line in a marathon.

Achievable: The goal is achievable with sufficient training.

Time Frame: Achieve this within one year.

Short-term Goal

This will involve keeping my body in good shape. This will be achieved by ensuring that I am taking a healthy diet at all times. It will be coupled with going to the gym regularly to ensure that the body is within the desired frame.

Intermediate Goal

Ensuring that I gain the necessary endurance that will help me to participate and complete the marathon of choice. The endurance will be gained by indulging in running activities in different terrains to ensure that I am comfortable running under varying terrains.

Long-term Goal

This will involve establishing the marathon that I will be participating in. Here I have to ensure that I participate in the marathon and reach the finishing line.
