With the industrialization, the labor market was expanded and women were employed. However, they were paid less wages as compared to men. With time the women became enlightened and realized they were being discriminated against. This gave rise to the rise of the Seneca Falls convention convened by women to fight for their rights. Before the convention, they organizing women drafted a Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions. It contained the following catalogue of injustices to women. Women were denied access to professions, education, pulpit and equal pay for equal work. For married women they were not allowed to own property and even the wages earned in their employment belonged to their husbands.

Men played an important role in that they also joined the movement. Most of the abolitionists attended the Women’s Rights Convention in July in 1848. In addition those men who were members of the Free soil party also joined the women movement because the recognized some similarities between status of black men and women in the society. The Seneca Fall movement was supported by many elite women in America. Thereafter, national woman’s rights convention was held every year to focus on the rights of women in the society.

UTOPIAN COMMUNITIES

Just like other movements, many women, men and children were looking for an ideal society in the years between 1820 and 1860. They were searching for a utopia or an ideal society. The experimented heavily with the belief that a perfect community would be build by building experimental societies.  These experiments were performed in isolation from the society but they all had the desire to be perfect. Most of these communes disappeared without a trace with time.

The communes had the desire for change. They wanted to progress and they experimented with different forms and models of government, marriages, wealth and labor. Though these societies varied in philosophies, most were designed by intellectuals with religious or secular moral ideas. These societies aimed to perfect social relationships; reform the institutions of marriage and private property; and balance political, occupational, and religious influences.

The movement reflects the changing values of America through the different policies and reforms that have been adopted over the years. These values reflect the need to have a more perfect society that is balanced. Through the years, policies have been enacted and reenacted to make society better. This is just like the Utopian movement since the American people use these policies as experiments to see if the society will be better.

UTOPIAN COMMUNITIES

Hi Lauren, great line of thought over there. I agree with you that the Utopian community was seen as the new civilization. With charismatic leaders who had either secular or religious moral ideas, these communities experimented with different forms and models of government, marriages, wealth and labor. There were many societies like these but with time disappeared never to be traced. Though there were difference3s between these communities, there existed a bond in each society which allowed people to live together as an utopian community.
