Week 4 Journal: Challenges facing World Vision and Etihad Airways

Problems Facing Not-for-Profit Company (World Vision)

World Vision International is a not-for-profit organization that offers humanitarian services, especially to the children. The organization is faced with numerous challenges ranging from financial problems to other ethical issues that are likely to hinder smooth operations of the organization. Being a Christian foundation, most of the employees of the organization have found it difficult offering humanitarian services to people with different faith (Worldvision.org.uk, 2015). This is a major challenge to the organization since there are children in need who do not claim the Christian faith. It is imperative noting that this is detrimental and against the mission and vision of the organization. Additionally, the organization’s employees are also faced with great risks as they offer humanitarian services especially in countries hit with conflicts like Syria and Afghanistan.

These challenges can cripple the operations of the organization especially as the number of victims in need of humanitarian services is increasing every day. These problems are prevalent within the organization due to the existence of different religious faiths in different parts of the world. It is prudent noting that some of the organization’s employees blame some of these challenges to different faiths such as Muslim. For instance, ISIS is believed to me a group of Islam extremist who have caused a humanitarian crisis in Syria (Worldvision.org.uk, 2015). Employees from the organization risk their lives as they offer humanitarian services in such countries and feel less motivated to serve in such countries.

It is, however, wise noting that the organization has put relentless efforts to deal with these challenges. For instance, the organization has tried to pool high qualified personnel with high ethical standards to work in the organization. The organization always emphasizes the commitment of the employees that is vital to offering humanitarian services. World vision is continuously training its employees on the importance of making a sacrifice for the best interest of the suffering children. It is the objective of the organization to keep hiring employees that take inspired action aimed at creating a more humane world. The not-for-profit organization has also organized world humanitarian day where it addresses the issues affecting the organization. During such forums, the organization takes this opportunity to sensitize workers to the important role they play in putting their life at stake and save lives (Worldvision.org.uk, 2015). In essence, the organization has been guided by the vision and mission statements in dealing with the challenges facing the organization.

Problems Facing For-Profit Company (Etihad Airways)

Although Etihad Airways has been performing well over the years, it is prudent understanding that the organization has been facing numerous challenges. One of the major challenges that the organization has been facing is the endless number of legal tussles that the organizations involved in (TravelPulse, 2015). The organization has been a victim of aggressive protectionist sentiment especially in the United States and Europe. Etihad Airways and its partners in the airline industry has been the target of such sentiments from competitors who want to affect adversely consumer choice. The company has been improving customer service over the years, and this has not been on good terms with its competitors. The airline has also been accused of discriminatory labor practices and deplorable treatment of female employees (the Guardian, 2015).

The latest legal case involves association of professional flight attendants who are angered by the advert of the airline that involves Kidman. A TV commercial featuring Kidman with the company’s A380 plane has not been on good terms with the association. The organization claimed that the Airways discriminated women employees, especially during pregnancy (the Guardian, 2015). This is among the series of legal battles that the company has had to deal with the dynamic airline industry. Most of these adversaries facing the airline are attributed to competitors who want to limit competition. Labor movements and labor unions have also been a major source of external challenges facing the organization.

The ever increasing number of legal battles at the organization would have adverse effects on the performance of the company. It would have a detrimental effect on consumer choice since this would paint the company in a bad image. Additionally, the company will also have to spend some substantial amount of time and money in defense of these claims (TravelPulse, 2015). Use of these funds would have adverse effects on the overall profitability of the company. It would also have negative effects on the company’s attempt to attract the highly qualified personnel necessary for a competitive edge. Nevertheless, the company has not been devastated by these challenges and has dealt with them appropriately.  Intensive promotional activities and improved customer service have been the solution to these challenges (the Guardian, 2015). The company has also maintained its core values and work ethics that have attracted the best personnel in the labor market.   Media publications denouncing these claims have worked well to the advantage of the company. The company has always remained focused to fulfill the mission and vision of the company and has refused obstruction from these legal tussles.
