Whistleblowing refers to the moral action that an employee takes with the aim to bring wrongdoing to an end. Since the whistleblower takes the risk of losing the job by taking the measures, it is essential to follow the right channel. According to Pohjanoksa, Stolt, Suhonen, Löyttyniemi, & Leino-Kilpi (2017), whistleblowing can either be internal or external.” A whistleblower can choose to release information to an internal party or an external party. The employee who decides to release information on wrongdoing should consider the most ethical and efficient means. Since the action can result in a job loss, the employee should start with internal whistleblowing. If the organization fails to take action, then external whistleblowing is inevitable. The choice between internal and external organization determines the consequences of whistleblowing.

Whichever means the whistleblower chooses, there are consequences that the person has to deal with, avoid, or accept. The whistleblower may receive support or approval for the actions. However, the whistleblower can also face negative consequences such as job loss or discrimination (Pohjanoksa et al., 2017). The whistleblower has to evaluate the implications of the act before taking action against any wrongdoing. Ethically, a person should determine a situation critically to decide the motion to take to address the situation (Chapter forty-seven, n.d.). In other words, if whistleblowing is ethically justifiable, a person should strive to gain moral courage to take action. The whistleblower should consider the consequences but should attempt to control risk aversion. If an activity promotes honest and ethical standing, it is worth taking regardless of the results. Fear of the consequences impedes moral courage and could prevent a person from making the right decision.
