Why we should support euthanasia in the society

Hello everyone, my name is Vladislava Shumilova. Today I stand before you to speak about why we should support euthanasia in the society. I will try to give the reasons why euthanasia should be legalized and why I support the process. I hope that after this talk our understanding of the problem will be similar.

Ladies and gentlemen, I want you to imagine a case scenario where you are sick beyond recovery. Imagine yourself not being able to feed or clothe yourself. Think of a situation where you are in extreme pain and no medicine can help. Would like to live in pain and suffer knowing it will never end? Have you been to a hospital and seen terminally ill patients suffering in pain? Did you think about the amount of pain experienced by those people? If yes, did you feel pity for them, what came up in your mind? If you know what those patients are going through, then you may understand why I support euthanasia. I know it from my own experience. My grandmother was diagnosed with cancer. It was one of the most terrible points of my life. I saw my grandmother suffering in pain day and night. We knew she would not make it as well as that she would suffer unbearable pain. From this sad experience, my position is that we need to support euthanasia in society. In my speech and slide presentation, I will try to give you some facts and reasons for it.

From my survey monkey, 100% agree that euthanasia is the only solution in a case where a patient is not recovering from an incurable disease. However, 35% supported that euthanasia is morally right while 65% thought that the practice is immoral. 65% of responding had an idea of the method while 35% are not aware of what euthanasia is all about. In the United States of America 72% of people are in support of euthanasia legalization.According to Keown (2018), 54% of Americans agree that if euthanasia is doctor-assisted, then it is morally acceptable in society.

On the other hand, only 42% who believes that the doctor-assisted suicide is morally wrong. The debate for and against the practice of euthanasia has intensified well in the last few years. The society today is divided between those who support and oppose the method of euthanasia. Euthanasia is an intentional act of taking life by physicians to relieve patients from persistent pain (Keown, 2018).  The action is meant to grant the patients a peaceful death. Many people suffer from conditions and diseases which are incurable and are painful to live with; the only way to help these people is to grant them a peaceful death to end their suffering. Despite being an intentional act of taking life, the patient should give consent to be euthanized. My position is that euthanasia should be legal because we all have control of our bodies. No one likes tormenting pain. But what if it becomes even more persisted and exhausting?  Human beings have the right to decide whether to end their lives or not.

Sometimes in life, the only way to end someone’s pain is by death. There are cases where people suffer enormously due to illness. This pain makes life unbearable for people, and they lack hope for tomorrow. Euthanasia is not painful. It is a process that takes between 5-15 minutes and the hearts stops beating. Many patients go through these painful experiences even when they know it will never end (Brouwer et al., 2018).  I am talking out of an experience.  How painful and emotionally unbearable it was watching my beloved grandmother struggle with cancer. No painkillers helped. According to Brouwer (2018), if a patient suffers for more than 7 months from an incurable disease, then euthanasia can be considered as an option. The Granny begged us to do something to stop her suffering, but we could do nothing to help her. We just set nearby, and our hearts were bursting with terrible grief. As family members, we had hope things would be well but unfortunately, we lost her.  What is the point of suffering in pain when you know it will never end?  In cases where the pain is unbearable, and there is no hope for survival the only way out I think is a peaceful death to end the patient’s suffering. This is well illustrated in my slides.

I believe every person has freedom of choice; especially deadly ill patients have the free will to decide what to do with their bodies. The law protects personal decisions by giving everyone freedom of choice. When patients feel that they are a burden to their families, they can decide to get a peaceful death. (Orentlicher, 2017). By consenting to be euthanized, they express their will to die peacefully. Patients who make such decisions have to be granted their wish since it is their way of exercising their freedom of choice. Some diseases like kidney failure and cancer are dangerous and incurable According to Orentlicher (2017), a family with a patient suffering from an incurable disease will spend $50 to $100 a day in hospital bills. Out of 10 people with a chronic illness 6 are most likely to get cured. They leave the families no chance to help their beloved relatives.  The families become impoverished as a result of paying substantial medical bills. But what happens if they can’t afford it any longer or can’t afford it at all?  They end up paying significant hospital bills, and yet the relative dies. In my opinion, sometimes it’s better to die peacefully than leave your family suffering and paying huge bills.

Do you have an idea of countries where euthanasia is legalized? Well, according to Fontalis (2018), few countries have legalized euthanasia. In Europe, we have Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Canada, Netherland, and the United States. However, in the US it is only in Washington and Oregon states. We also have Columbia in South America.  Many people say that they want to die in honor and preserve their dignity. Even in death, people want to prove that they lived a good life. Some people see their pride and reputation by being healthy for everyone.  According to Orentlicher (2017), when people are incredibly sick and vulnerable, they feel as if they have lost their honor.  Other humans want their choices to be respected and honored. Therefore, when vulnerable patients choose a peaceful death, they preserve their dignity by dying strong and having an opportunity of their own. Let’s show them respect even at death bed by granting them their wish.

Can you measure pain the client is going through? I don’t think so. There are no specific measurements for the amount of pain which should be intolerable; therefore allowing euthanasia due to suffering is the best option a patient can go for. On the other hand, there is no such thing as an honorable death. Death is a general thing regardless of how a person dies. Although euthanasia might be a hard pill to swallow, it will save the family from physiological trauma. It leaves a considerable gap whenever one family member dies, however its good that way than to see the member in constant pain. However, my point is that if euthanasia has to be allowed it should involve all family members and friends. The doctor needs to engage them as they are part and parcel of the patient.

The choices we make in life have consequences. According to Sprung (2018), the choices we make when it comes to euthanasia will be a benefit to the rest of the family members. I also would not like to see one of my family members suffer knowing well there is no hope. The discussion on euthanasia is still ongoing in society. As discussed above, people have a right to make their own choices about their lives. A good organization should not criticize an individual decision to die peacefully in honor (Sprung et al., 2018).  The society should support the act of euthanasia during extreme situations such as incurable diseases which cause pain to patients. However, euthanasia should not be used as an excuse to take someone’s life against his will. At the same time, it should not be used as an excuse for suicide by people. I think controlled euthanasia should be allowed in the hospitals and the society should support the act.

Ladies and gentlemen as I conclude let me say that in life there comes a time when we are forced to makes decisions against our wish. It’s the joy of every person to have a happy and healthy family. However, we cannot control nature. In case of illness, we pray hard that the doctors do their best and save lives. However, in a situation beyond the control of doctors it means that we are left with no option but to relieve the patient off the pain and the most appropriate way to achieve that is through assisted death. I am grateful for all of you for taking your time to listen to me. Thank you.
